Reasons why you need to repair
To find out exactly what the repair of plasterboard suspended ceilings will include , let's first look at what are the most common problems that happen with the ceiling.
The first and main reason for the appearance of defects on the plasterboard ceiling is a violation in the manufacturing technology of the frame, during installation, or a violation of the finish. It is not uncommon for problems with a ceiling covering to arise solely due to improper installation of the structure.
The air temperature in the room can harm the plasterboard ceiling. Moreover, the design is vulnerable both during installation and during operation.
Of course, damage can occur due to the fault of neighbors from above. After all, there are situations when we find ourselves flooded by our own neighbors.
Sometimes, instead of special green moisture-resistant drywall sheets, when installing the ceiling in the bathroom, ordinary gray drywall is used . This is unacceptable, since the air humidity in the bathroom is increased, and this harms the drywall sheets if they are not endowed with special moisture-resistant abilities.
Brick buildings, sometimes, just sit down. From this, the plasterboard ceiling also deteriorates .
Sometimes, the cause of the repair may not be damage to the ceiling and its plasterboard sheathing, but the appearance of mold. This is indeed a very big problem, since mold not only spoils the appearance of the room, but also harms the health of a person who breathes air in a room where the ceiling is infected with fungus. Before getting rid of such an unpleasant neighbor, you need to find out what is the reason for the appearance of mold and eliminate it. If this is not done, the fungus may return again.
Most often, mold appears in the bathroom, but do not rush to attribute this to high humidity in the room. There are other causes of mold in the bathroom. Firstly, damage to the pipes, due to which water flows and, as a result, the humidity of the room increases. Secondly, it is poor ventilation. Mold is more likely to form in poorly ventilated areas. So check the pipes and ventilation before cleaning the fungus.
Repair of cracks and damage
When you have eliminated all the causes of defects, it's time to start eliminating the symptoms themselves.
To eliminate a crack, it must first be cut. Jointing is carried out at the site of the crack. For this, a chisel is used. With it, putty is removed and the crack expands. At this stage, many try to preserve the integrity of the material, but this is a mistake. It's best to get rid of any pieces that don't stick well enough, this will prevent future defects. Next, using sandpaper, remove the paint from the surface within a few centimeters from the crack. This will greatly improve the adhesion of the putty layer you apply to fill the crack.
After you remove everything superfluous from the place of processing, you can start applying the primer. Attention, before proceeding with the subsequent treatment of the damaged area, allow the primer to dry completely. Treat all cracks in the ceiling with a primer, wait for it to dry, and only then begin to close them up. To close the cracks, you need to use a fugenfüller . It dries quickly and is best for the job. After you cover all the cracks with fugenfüller , wait for it to dry. The material dries for about a day. After drying, you can proceed to finishing and painting the damaged areas.
Sometimes cracks appear on the ceiling, which are too large in size so that they can simply be covered with putty. In such a situation, you will have to make a special patch and install it on the damaged area of the drywall surface. The patch is fixed with adhesive tape and finished with a finish. Cover the patched area with putty and apply the exterior finish. In some cases, it will be better to insert the patch inside the ceiling, rather than fix it on the surface. The patch is pushed into the hole formed and fixed from below with screws.
Ceiling damage is not always limited to simple cracks. In the event that defects began to form as a result of improper installation of the ceiling, it is likely that it will be necessary to completely or at least partially change the skin.
If the plasterboard ceiling began to sag, then there are three ways to solve this problem. If the sagging has formed only in a small area, limited by one drywall sheet, then you can remove this sheet and put a bar under it. The plank will support the structure and slight sagging of the ceiling will be eliminated.
If the sag is completely insignificant and creates only relative unevenness, then everything is even simpler. Take the plaster, and apply a thick layer to the curvature of the ceiling. Do not spare the plaster, cover the ceiling until it is finally leveled.
If the sag is really significant and occupies a large area, then the problem lies in the incorrect installation of the frame. You will have to remove the entire trim. When the old drywall sheets are removed, tighten the frame where necessary. Correct any places on the frame that are not properly mounted. After the problem is fixed, install a new layer of drywall sheets on the frame.
